Palm Springs Police Warn Seniors of Scam Calls Asking for Money
Scammers are getting more convincing—and Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills is urging seniors to be extra cautious.
In an interview with NBC’s Fred Roggin, Chief Mills explained that impersonators are calling residents, pretending to be law enforcement officers, and demanding payment. Some even reference things like POA (power of attorney) matters to sound more legitimate.
“A lot of people are getting calls from someone claiming to be from the police or sheriff's department,” Mills said. “The reality is—we will never call someone and ask for money.”
He emphasized that the police do not collect payments over the phone or via email under any circumstance.
“Do not give your money over the phone or via email to anybody,” he added.
As scams become more sophisticated, Chief Mills encouraged residents—especially seniors—to hang up immediately and verify any suspicious claims by calling local authorities directly.
You can hear the full interview and more safety tips from Chief Mills on The Roggin Report tonight at 6:30 p.m. on NBC Palm Springs.
