The governor of the state of Rio De Janeiro declared a state of financial emergency in advance of the Olympics.

The governor requested federal funds to help the state fulfill its obligations for public services during the games, which start August 5th.

Brazil’s interim president, Michel Temer, has said the federal government would ensure all obligations to the Olympics were met.

The Rio governor justified the emergency request, saying that there could be a "total collapse" of services such as public security, health, education and transportation.

This comes less than 50 days before the start of the games.

This is the first time the continent of South America has hosted the Olympics.
