PALM SPRINGS, Ca.
The Spa Resort Casino in Downtown Palm Springs is transforming their property on the corner of Indian Canyon Drive and Andreas Road into a beach side paradise for their "Sandsational Summer" event.
The focal point of the event will be a giant sand sculpture of the iconic Marilyn Monroe. The Spa Resort Casino brought in a champion team of artists, who are husband and wife, to create the sculpture with twenty tons of desert sand.
"Just sand and water we basically build a form work, the forms are filled in layers and we use construction equipment to compact it in layers and then the forms are removed revealing a compacted block and everything is sculpted out of that block," says co-artist Greg Glenn.
The pair has been creating sand art for nearly 30 years. It takes a special kind of artist to embrace the temporary aspect of this medium.
"You don’t get attached to anything if you’re doing sand sculptures cause you won’t stay in this profession very long if you do," laughs Greg adding that most pieces only last days.
But the pair of artists say they hope their art leaves a lasting impression on those who get to admire it for a moment in time.
"To appreciate the fact that it is temporary … and hopefully they can take that away and hopefully it maybe it’ll inspire them to be creative themselves," says Brandi Glenn.
The event will be on Saturday July, 2, 2016 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and be filled with vendors, food, fun, live entertainment and fun for the whole family.
The cost will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12-years-old.
