About 880 Imperial Irrigation District customers lost power in Coachella Friday because someone stole copper from three vaults.

Electricity was restored to all addresses within about two hours.

The outage was reported at 10:20 a.m., affecting the area along the western border of Coachella where it meets the city of Indio, according to IID’s Marion Champion.

Repair crews were dispatched to the utility’s Jackson substation to determine the cause of the outage, Champion said.

About 11:05 a.m., IID reported that power was restored to all but 93 customers. Power was fully restored just after noon, according to IID.
