Cathedral City, CA

A man arrested for allegedly brandishing a knife at a Cathedral City convenience store demanded cash from the employee, but only made off with gum and chapstick, police reported today.

Nelson Omar Portillo, 26, is accused of entering the 7-Eleven at 68490 Dinah Shore Drive armed with a knife.

Police say that at 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 1, Portillo demanded cash from the store clerk, who refused.

Portillo then allegedly took handfuls of chewing gum and chapstick and left on foot, northbound on Cathedral Canyon Drive.

Responding officers could not find Portillo, but the store clerk recognized him from previous incidents, said Lt. Glen Haas.

A subsequent investigation led officers to arrest Portillo at about 2:40 p.m. Sunday.
