Whitewater, CA

A motorcyclist was fatally injured when his bike struck a railing at a Whitewater freeway overpass, sending him onto a car on the interstate below, the California Highway Patrol reported today.

Eugene Bess Jr., 28, of Yucca Valley, was killed in a crash that happened about 4 p.m. Thursday at state Route 62 and Interstate 10. According to CHP, Bess had lived in Pompano, Florida.

Bess was headed south on the transition road from state Route 62 to eastbound Interstate 10 when his bike drifted to the right and into a concrete bridge wall and railing, said CHP Officer Mike Radford.

He was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on top of 34-year-old Maria Barreras’ 2013 Buick Lacrosse, which was in the right lanes of westbound Interstate 10.

Bess died at the scene, while Barreras and her four passengers were uninjured, Radford said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
