A man and woman were able to escape a Desert Hot Springs house fire unscathed Thursday, but three dogs were killed in the blaze that started in the attic.

More than 20 county firefighters were sent at 2:37 a.m. to the single- story home in the 12000 block of Cuando Way and extinguished the blaze at 3:12 a.m., said April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department.

However, the fire sparked again about 10:40 a.m., prompting crews to return to the scene to extinguish the flare-up, she said.

The cause of the fire, which caused an estimated $75,000 in damages, was under investigation.
