Riverside County homicide detectives are investigating the death of an inmate who suffered traumatic injuries in his cell at the Larry Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, authorities said.
The inmate was found about 3 p.m. Saturday in the jail at 1627 South Hargrave St., said sheriff’s Sgt. Jeff Buompensiero. He was suffering from traumatic injuries and was unresponsive, he said.
“Doctors and medical staff performed life-saving measures. However, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” he said.
The inmate’s name was withheld pending family notification of relatives, Buompensiero said. By early this morning, authorities had not said how the inmate came to be injured.
