Prep Football Preview: DVL Opening Night

KMIR

DVL play opens for our favorite teams so we’ll see how the previous 4 weeks of tuning up prepared our local squads for league play. And if that weren’t exciting enough, we kick it off with one of the valley’s most heated rivalries.

Here’s the docket for Friday night’s games and of course, we’ll be looking forward to seeing you out there. Send us your pictures and videos on social media using #KMIRSports.

Palm Desert at Xavier Prep: Less than 5 miles of Cook Street separate the Saints and Aztecs. While the Saints lost their home opener to Aquinas last week, their offense has been clicking and sitting at 2-2 heading into league play, Xavier Prep is feeling, well, peppy.

Meanwhile, the Aztecs head into this massive rivalry match reeling after 2 straight shutout losses. Since lighting up the scoreboard for 47 at home against the Mighty Arabs, the Aztecs haven’t scored a point. Will facing their rival ignite the squad and turn that around? We’ll find out tonight.

Palm Springs at Indio: Let’s head east where the Indians face the Rajahs at Indio High. The defending DVL champs are 2-2 after an early season forfeit notched a check in the win column and last week their offense came alive against Kaiser for their first official win.

The Rajahs went toe-to-toe with the Arabs in the Bell Game, but fell. Quarterback Dimitri Long has declared this is a ‘new era’ for Indio football, beating last year’s league champ would certainly prove that.

Shadow Hills at Cathedral City: The Knights are in the Lions’ den tonight to kick off their first DVL game. Both teams are coming off wins, but Shadow Hills seems to be putting it all together heading into their first game in their new league. Tonight will be the real test.

Beaumont at Desert Hot Springs: Desert Hot Springs High School is looking for it’s first win after yet another 1-possession loss last week. They’re hosting Beaumont.

ROAD GAMES:

La Quinta at Roosevelt

Coachella Valley at Rubidoux

Desert Mirage at Calexico

And don’t forget, this year, because of the new playoff format, gone are the 3 guaranteed playoff spots for the DVL. The only team guaranteed to make the playoffs is league winner. That journey begins tonight.

And if the past few weeks are any indication, we could be in for a really fun league season for Friday Night Lights. De Anza League play begins in earnest in 2 weeks.
