PALM SPRINGS, Ca.

A fundraiser by the Palm Springs Police Officer Association raised more than a quarter million dollars for the families of fallen officers Jose "Gil" Vega and Lesley Zerebny.

The community showed support for the two officers during a day long fundraiser at Palm Springs City Hall. During the 14 hour event, hundreds of people stopped by to drop off donations large and small. That even included a three year old girl who donated the contents of her piggy bank.

Palm Springs Police Chief Bryan Reyes expressed his thanks to the community for the support. He also reflected on how officers Vega and Zerebny were much more than just city employees. "They’re human beings like all of us," Reyes said. "They share their families’ experiences. They share their days off. Playing with their kids, sports. We talk about whose team won, every day life just like everyone else. And the very next day, they’re not to be seen."

If you didn’t make it out on Friday, you can still contribute. Just click here and make a donation online.

A memorial service for officers Vega and Zerebny will be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on Tuesday at 11 a.m. It will also be carried live on KMIR.
