California Highway Patrol says a Thousand Palms man was killed after being hit by a car as he walked along Highway 86 in Thermal Sunday Night. The initial incident happened sometime before 11:15 p.m. near Avenue 84.
The victim is identified as 30-year-old Brandon Cooper of Thousand Palms. Officers say he was walking down Highway 86, when a car hit him, leaving him partially in the roadway. The car that hit Cooper did not stop according to officers.
Around 11:15 p.m., officers say a 38-year-old woman from Cathedral City was driving her 2005 Ford Mustang down Highway 86 and noticed an object partially in the roadway. Before she could swerve, she hit the Coopers body. The woman did stop after the impact and did cooperate with CHP Officers about the collision. Cooper died on the scene about 15 minutes later.
CHP say inside of the mans pocket, they found a players card from Red Earth Casino and believe that’s where he was walking from when he was hit by that car.
Officers have little information about what type of car hit Cooper or who was driving that car. They do say alcohol/drugs may have been a factor in the initial collision. They’re asking for the public’s help with any information as to who would’ve been driving that car. Contact California Highway Patrol in Indio at (760) 772-5300.
