Palm Springs, CA

A package that was left outside the Bob Hope USO at Palm Springs International Airport today, triggering a bomb squad response, turned out to contain a water timer inside a Tupperware container inadvertently left behind by an airport employee, police said.

According to Palm Springs Police, the USO building was having irrigation issues and needed the container to protect the timer. An employee placed the water timer in the container and failed to tell other employees about the container.

Palm Springs police Sgt. Hutchinson said the unmarked package was reported via a 911 call about 10:25 a.m., and officers arrived moments later, cordoning off the immediate area.

The USO is on the west side of the airport complex, just off of El Cielo Road, adjacent to the car rental lot that serves the aerodrome.

Northbound El Cielo Road from Tahquitz Canyon Way was shut down during the investigation, which wrapped up before 1 p.m. and did not prompt any evacuations of the airport, nor any disruptions to flight operations, Hutchinson said.
