Two children ages 6 and 8, were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision in Mead Valley that authorities said was the result of an illegal street race.

A blue Honda Accord and a black Nissan Altima are suspected of racing on Oakwood Avenue east from Brown Street at about 5:40 p.m. with the Honda traveling on the wrong side of the road, according to Dan Olivas with the California Highway Patrol.

The Honda driver collided head-on with a Nissan Versa, Olivas said.

Two children in the Nissan were rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, and they both later died, Olivas said.

The drivers of the Honda and Nissan both suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, Olivas said.

The Honda driver will face vehicular manslaughter charges and the CHP is asking for the public’s help to find the black Nissan Altima, believed to possibly be a 2005 model, Olivas said.
